On Thursday, January 5, 2007, the rectory of St. Thomas' Church in Bath, the house we live in, suffered a fire. I thought you might enjoy seeing some pictures.
The fire was caused by a holiday floodlight on a timer. While Brad and I
were in Arizona visiting his mother, roofers put a new roof on the rectory.
They moved the floodlight, leaving it resting against the shingles outside
the vestibule. Due to the unusually warm weather, it got hot enough to
actually ignite the siding. Fortunately, no one was in the house - even
Autumn was being dog-sat elsewhere. Someone driving by spotted the
smoke, and neighbors called 911. Thanks to the quick work of firefighters,
the house was spared and physical damage was limited to the very front
of the house.
Above and right: Gary Corell and
his crew demolishing the burned
roof and rebuilding. The crazy
weather in January and February
made for some tough going for the
crews - luckily they were able to
seal off the roof before the
snowstorms hit - see pic at left.
The reward after all this was being able to redecorate. Happily Brad and I didn't lose too much to the fire, but
smoke damage did ruin all the upholstery. Our loveseats were trashed, but Brad's antique dining chairs and my
Dad's Eastlake settee were able to be reupholstered. We enjoyed shopping for some new furniture, rugs and
drapes, and took advantage of the opportunity to repaint with some warm colors in the living and dining rooms.
Below and right, a couple of
"before" pictures from when we
moved in. White walls, white
plush carpeting, etc. We had
always planned to at least paint
the walls, but we were able to
completely redecorate!
Above, Autumn surveys the neighborhood through one of the lovely and energy-efficient
new storm/screen doors. At left, my Dad's junkstore find, a lovely Eastlake settee with
gorgeous new upholstery, beautifully done by Recchichi Upholstery here in Bath.
Below, a number of pictures of the "new" rooms. Nice warm wall colors,
refinished floors (thanks to Chet Wilcox of Bath), new sofas from Ethan
Allen, new rugs, reupholstered furniture (done by Recchichi Upholstery in
Bath), and a new furniture arrangement. We can now seat ten or more
people in the living room, which is great for entertaining the vestry or choir!
